Urban and Regional Planning

About Urban and Regional Planning Department

The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Urban and Regional Planning programme trains students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in the art and science of managing land uses to meet social, economic, physical, and environmental needs. It prepares graduates to plan and develop human settlements efficiently and sustainably through a strong understanding of spatial relationships and societal dynamics.

The philosophy of the programme is to produce planners who are analytical, creative, and capable of formulating policies and plans for balanced urban and regional development. The objectives are to provide a conducive learning environment for effective training, promote teamwork and collaboration among staff and students, align with the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) and the Town Planners Registration Council (TOPREC) to maintain high academic and professional standards, and encourage interaction with practitioners through workshops and seminars. The programme also fosters partnerships with national and international institutions for research and knowledge exchange.

The unique features of the programme include training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing, hands-on experience in model-making and design workshops, proficiency in digital tools such as AutoCAD and GPS, and exposure to current trends in climate change, environmental management, and sustainable urban development. Students also develop entrepreneurial and professional competencies to establish private practices and contribute to regional integration.

Graduates of Urban and Regional Planning are equipped to work in public and private sectors, including federal, state, and local planning offices, environmental protection agencies, emergency management institutions, transportation and power industries, and international organizations. They can also serve as consultants, researchers, and educators in universities, polytechnics, and specialized research centres.

The programme emphasizes 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, research and analytical ability, communication, leadership, teamwork, adaptability, and ICT proficiency, preparing graduates to address emerging urban and regional planning challenges globally.
