About Building Technology Department
The Bachelor of Technology in Building Technology (B.Tech Building Technology) is designed to prepare graduates for leadership roles in the construction industry—a vital sector responsible for shaping the physical landscape of nations and driving economic and technological advancement. The programme integrates technological, managerial, and scientific innovations aimed at improving building performance to ensure that structures are safe, durable, cost-effective, sustainable, and responsive to human needs. It advances the science and practice of building technology and construction management by applying knowledge in areas such as site operations, contracting, finance, building production, and maintenance to solve complex challenges in the built environment. Graduates are expected to demonstrate professionalism, health and safety awareness, ethical responsibility, and innovative thinking, contributing meaningfully to the growth and technological progress of Nigeria’s construction industry.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, the programme exposes students to the science and technology of construction and built-environment management while empowering them to harness local resources for sustainable development. It emphasizes intellectual capacity-building, self-employment, research, and the scientific application of construction materials and techniques. The training is structured to produce graduates with strong competence in the science, technology, and management of building processes, enabling them to collaborate effectively with allied professionals and contribute to the building delivery process. Students develop creative and innovative skills necessary to improve the quality, safety, and sustainability of the built environment while being prepared for registration with professional bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) and the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).
The programme further equips students with employability and 21st-century skills, including proficiency in building production and management, facility and maintenance management, construction technology, project and health safety, procurement and commercial management, and the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM). It also enhances competencies in critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, information literacy, technological adaptability, flexibility, leadership, and productivity. The curriculum aligns with the core competency requirements of the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) and NIOB, providing a strong theoretical foundation and hands-on practical training. A distinctive feature of the programme is the inclusion of supervised Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), which ensures that graduates acquire relevant industrial experience prior to graduation. This holistic approach produces versatile, industry-ready professionals capable of thriving in both local and international construction environments
