Legislative Journey

The establishment of FUTES traces its origins to a bill sponsored by Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District. Initially proposed in 2021 as the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, the institution’s scope was later refined to focus on technology and environmental sciences.

After passing its second reading in the Senate on 16 March 2021, the bill underwent further deliberation. On 17 October 2023, Senator Bamidele, now Senate Leader, reintroduced the bill, which received accelerated approval on 27 October 2023. The Senate subsequently referred it to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for final legislative action.

Presidential Assent and Inauguration

On 20 February 2025, President Tinubu signed the bill into law alongside the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji.

Subsequently, a five-member Governing Council was inaugurated by the president, chaired by Senator Binta Masi Garba as Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson. Other members of the Council include Professor Joseph Olurotimi Sanya, Mr. Efe Emefienin Emmanuel, Dr. Joyce Ogunyemi and Alhaji Dahiru Abdullahi Ruma.

On 25 March 2025, the President appointed FUTES’s pioneer management team, including:

  • Vice-Chancellor: Professor James Olugbenga Aribisala
  • Registrar: Mr. Oluwole Olalere Dada
  • Bursar: Mrs. Adeniyi Rachael Ajayi
  • Librarian: Professor Isaac Oluwadare Busayo

Land and Community Support

FUTES operates from a 200-hectare site generously facilitated by the Iyin-Ekiti community. The land donation was spearheaded by His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeola Adeniyi Ajakaye, CFR, the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, who convened a Land Search Committee chaired by the late Professor Adeyinka Adeyemi. The community’s unwavering commitment and unity were instrumental in securing the university’s foundation.

Looking Ahead

As a beacon of innovation and sustainability, FUTES is poised to become a global leader in technology-driven environmental solutions. We invite collaboration with academia, industry, and policymakers to shape a greener, more sustainable future.
