Architecture, as an interdisciplinary field, integrates knowledge from the humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences. The programme trains students in the art and science of planning, design, construction, maintenance, management, and coordination of various development in the built environment. It seeks to accommodate human activities under diverse conditions with a strong understanding of different physical contexts, while responding to the changes in social, economic, psychological, and technological needs of the society.

The philosophy of the programme is to provide a broad-based education that combines technological and scientific knowledge with artistic skills and environmental sensitivity for the design and construction of functional, aesthetic, and sustainable spaces for human use. It leverages Nigeria’s rich cultural and traditional heritage, ensuring that students develop a strong sense of identity and responsibility in architectural design and practice.

The main objective of the Architecture programme is to produce competent, creative, intellectually mature, ethical, and socially responsible architects. It equips students with advanced knowledge of the environmental, social, cultural, economic, and technological contexts that influence design and construction in the built environment. The programme provides a high-quality design education that emphasizes design principles, creative thinking, and problem-solving, while nurturing the capacity to respond appropriately to local and global design challenges. Students are also developed to acquire professional knowledge, technical competence, and leadership qualities for coordinating design and construction processes, while cultivating research interests and entrepreneurial abilities that foster self-reliance and innovation.

The unique features of the programme are centered on addressing global and contemporary issues such as sustainability, gender inclusivity, globalization, digital communication, climate change, and modern business models. It emphasizes the study of architecture within local contexts, including Nigerian architectural history and heritage, while integrating digital technologies into design education. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates to meet both local and international standards of professional practice.

Employability is a key focus of the programme. Courses such as Entrepreneurship for Architects are introduced to instill decision-making, critical thinking, and business management skills. Students acquire digital proficiency in architectural software, communication, and presentation techniques that enhance teamwork, visualization, and verbal articulation of design ideas. Practical exposure is ensured through Workshop Practice and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), which bridge academic learning with real-world professional practice.
