Quantity Surveying
About Quantity Surveying Department
The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Quantity Surveying programme equips students with the knowledge and skills required for cost and financial management in the procurement and delivery of building, infrastructure, and engineering projects. While Quantity Surveying traditionally focuses on cost control and value management, recent advances in the construction sector—such as the adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Augmented and Virtual Reality (AVR), and the Internet of Things (IoT)—have expanded the professional scope of quantity surveyors. Graduates are now expected to function effectively as project managers, procurement advisers, construction arbitrators, and sustainable construction consultants.
The programme, therefore, provides a modernized and globally relevant curriculum designed to produce competent professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to national development, enhancing the construction value chain, and assuming leadership roles in the built environment. The philosophy of the programme is to produce graduates with a strong theoretical foundation and practical competence to plan, manage, and control project funds, and to adapt effectively to emerging areas within the profession. The objectives are to develop graduates with sound knowledge of cost, price, and value concepts for decision-making; ensure a balance between theoretical learning and practical training; equip students to provide technical, managerial, and financial services for construction and engineering projects; prepare graduates for teaching, research, and innovation; and produce leaders capable of addressing complex problems in multidisciplinary environments.
The unique features of the programme include alignment with the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN) and the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) competency standards, integration of strong theoretical and practical components, and participation in the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) to ensure hands-on industry exposure before graduation. The employability skills emphasized include proficiency in BIM, computerized measurement, cost planning, estimating, project management, contract administration, procurement, and commercial management, supported by strong ICT skills. These competencies enhance graduates’ employability both locally and internationally.
The programme also promotes 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, adaptability, research ability, effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and ICT literacy, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for evolving professional and technological landscapes in the global construction industry.
