The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Industrial Design programme equips learners with comprehensive knowledge, technical skills, and research competencies necessary for developing creative and innovative solutions to design challenges that address the needs of users, industries, and society through the production of mass-produced products, services, and systems.
The programme emphasizes the cultivation of professional standards and the exploration, development, and application of indigenous materials within specialised areas such as Graphics, Ceramics, Metals, Textiles, and Fashion Design. It aims to produce graduates with advanced 21st-century skills, entrepreneurial capacity, and professional competencies, making them job creators and employable professionals across diverse industries. The curriculum provides sound theoretical grounding and extensive practical training, enabling individuals to link educational experiences with societal values and needs. The programme integrates global best practices in industrial design while preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge systems related to traditional design and production processes. The philosophy of the programme is to produce creative graduates capable of designing functional products that prioritise the user’s perspective, focusing on aesthetics, usability, ergonomics, and sustainability.
The objectives are to enhance indigenous knowledge, aesthetic appreciation, and cultural awareness to promote home-grown solutions tailored to user and societal needs; guide students to use their creative skills to improve quality of life through the integration of scientific knowledge, analytical thinking, research, and technological applications; prepare students to be globally competitive and relevant in design and society; and equip them with employability and entrepreneurial skills for job creation after graduation.
The unique features of the programme include the development of cognitive and problem-solving skills in design thinking; acquisition of pragmatic, practice-based skills through workshops; training in communication, information technology, and marketing to promote products; and integration of computer-aided design (CAD) and digital technologies relevant to modern industrial design. Graduates of the programme are equipped to function as entrepreneurs or employees in design-related organizations, educators and researchers, product designers, consultants, technologists, personnel in government ministries, resource persons in design and standards bureaus, international agencies such as UNESCO and UNIDO, museum conservators, and professionals in corporate and media departments across sectors. The programme promotes the acquisition of 21st-century skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, reasoning, and analysis; research and inquiry skills; creativity, innovation, and artistic expression; perseverance, adaptability, and self-directed learning; effective oral and written communication; leadership, teamwork, and collaboration; as well as ICT literacy, media and internet proficiency, data analysis, and computer-aided design and programming.
