About Biology Department

The department has undergone several reviews and modifications to satisfy the needs of the 21st century. The curriculum contains the basic concepts and principles of Biology from the simple structure and function of the cell to more complex tissues, organs, systems, organisms and their relationships with the biosphere. At the 100 and 200 Levels, special emphasis has been given to basic units of life, the interaction of these units and the challenges encountered and their adaptiveness to our ecosystem, in an evolutionary manner. At the 300 and especially 500 level, the curriculum gradually moves and encourages student the use scientific processes to think critically and how to go about conducting research, reporting accordingly, and how their findings can be applied to satisfy varied needs of the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. This paradigm shift has been achieved by introducing courses such as bioinformatics, applied biotechnology, bio-entrepreneurial options, animal in prophylactics and therapeutics, amongst others. Such courses will enable graduates of Biology to become entrepreneurs or competent, employable individuals in any organization or a researcher/graduate student elsewhere in the world. A B.Sc. degree in Biology prepares graduates for entrepreneurship in agro activities, animal production systems, science school proprietorship, establishing and running analytical science laboratories, development and marketing of bio-products, bio-consultancy, establishing and running environmental NGOs, farming (Fish, poultry, horticulture, heliciculture, etc).
